Prior to the introduction of the leaveplanner online system we had various manual paper methods of authorising and controlling holidays across our four branches. These were very inefficient and time consuming and prone to incorrect recording. We have a total staff of approx. 284 and there was no consistency in reporting and Management had no real idea of what holiday or absence had been taken across the group.

All leave and any absences had to be requested on paper forms and the details then transposed onto wallcharts, updating Reception was a nightmare. As we merged with another firm of solicitors in 2000 we went from approximately 30 staff to 65 with all the extra paperwork that this entailed we needed to look for a system that was more central for everyone.

Life couldn't be more simpler, any requests for any type of leave are put through, everybody knows exactly how many days holiday they have left, how much sickness they have taken and Reception can see at a "click" who is out on any particular day. The reporting procedures assist management and everyone is happy - especially me as we now have a paper free system.

"As all our staff were based in different departments and locations, it was a real ordeal keeping track of when people wanted holidays as we had to make sure certain people did not take the same time off. As we used to use different diaries for different departments, it often meant people were waiting days (sometimes weeks!) to get authorisation for annual leave. It also meant that sometimes we double booked holidays and in some cases gave people time off they were not owed!"
